Open Spaces Planner-Southland District Council
About Council With 11% of the total land area of New Zealand, including Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island, The Southland District Council has the largest land area to manage of any territorial authority. Council not only encompasses the management and improvement of physical assets such as roads, bridges, water supply, cemeteries and parks but also the Southland communities' social, economic, cultural and environmental wellbeing. Council owns about 1250 hectares of reserves, including 34 sportsfields, 36 playgrounds, 38 tennis/netball courts, three skateboard facilities and several walking tracks. About the role
The Open Spaces Planner is responsible for the planning and delivery of Council’s reserve management plans, and supporting the team to develop meaningful relationships with Council, key partners and our communities. Reporting to the Open Spaces Lead you will contribute to shaping the future of Southland’s open spaces.
Responsibilities will include:
prepare, review and deliver reserve management plans for all reserves according to legislative requirements and strategic priorities, providing high-quality policy documents and implementation plans
contribute to strategy and planning, and advice to Council on the management of reserves and open spaces, including trends, risks and developments
engage with external stakeholders including but not limited to; community boards, active southland, environment southland, Te Ao Marama Incorporated (TAMI), great south, adjacent territorial authorities and our residents and ratepayers
engage with internal stakeholders and provide expert advice to staff in relation to opens spaces
drive implementation of projects in open spaces with the support of the project delivery, community facilities and community leadership teams
Our ideal candidate will:
have previous experience in project management and/or planning for parks and reserves
have a relevant tertiary qualification in planning, environmental management or parks management
be able to research, understand and apply planning and reserves act legislation
be highly professional and able to demonstrate political acumen
be comfortable communicating at all levels of Council and in the community, with excellent presentation and written skills
