Omanawa Falls-Off limits

Writer: Sam StrongSam Strong

TLC may have had it right according to Tauranga City Council. "Don't go chasing waterfalls" is the new theme song for the iconic Omanawa Falls, as access has become too dangerous according to council and the rohe’s hapū Ngāti Hangarau. 2 people have unfortunately died in the past 4 years attempting to access the falls, and until council and iwi can build a proper access route, the public are strongly advised not to access the site. Additional funding has been allocated to finish the build of a viewing platform, track, carpark and facilities, but direct access to the falls has now been denied, as additional funding (above and beyond what the council believes ratepayers should be contributing) would be needed to ensure cliff stabilization measures were taken.
