After more than a decade of waiting, the northern tip of Miramar Peninsula — Watt’s Peninsula / Mātai Moana — has officially been given reserve status. Around 72 hectares of land have been handed over to the Department of Conservation, and a new trust made up of Taranaki Whānui, Wellington City Council and DOC will look after its future. The area is packed with history, from ancient pā sites and wāhi tapu to military heritage like Fort Ballance, as well as important ecological values. This move means the land is now protected, and the community can look forward to enjoying and learning from this special place for generations to come.
