Feral cats have officially joined stoats, ferrets, weasels, rats and possums on the Predator Free 2050 eradication list. Conservation Minister Tama Potaka described feral cats as stone cold killers responsible for significant losses of native birds, bats, lizards and insects.
The announcement marks the first change to the predator list since the goal was launched in 2016. It follows strong public feedback calling for feral cats to be included and a growing understanding that feral animals are distinct from companion pets.
Eradication methods may include toxic baits or emerging genetic tools although Potaka emphasised that scientific solutions are still under development. The Minister also highlighted the need for clear distinctions between feral and companion cats. Discussions on microchipping and registration may follow in future policy processes.
Conservation groups have welcomed the decision which they say sends a strong signal to councils to strengthen regional approaches to feral cat management. Estimates suggest Aotearoa may have more than 2.4 million feral cats which are linked to the extinction of several native bird species.
